FOR THE FIRST 30 YEARS of their marriage, Lynne and Johannes von Trapp's
home was one of the small residences in the Trapp Family Lodge's staff-housing
complex, which they shared for a time with other staffers. Johannes,
Maria's youngest son, is a member of
the world-famous von Trapp family from Austria, the same family, of
course, featured in The Sound of Music. Lynne and Johannes operate
the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, where Johannes is CEO and
president. It's a 24/7 occupation that requires the couple to live
on the Lodge's grounds. |

As their family grew to include two children, Lynne and Johannes remodeled,
added on, and eventually took over the house. Still, even after the
remodeling, it never seemed quite their own. "We'd always talked
about building," says Lynne, "but 'where' was never an issue."
It seems Johannes had his eye on a piece of property, a scant mile
from the Lodge, which had once been a farm. It had mature trees, hills
and lovely views, an old stone wall-and an owner who wasn't yet ready
to sell.
But Johannes wasn't fazed. "I used to lead trail rides by there
every day," he recalls. "The land was beautiful and I always
said we'd build on it someday." And build they did.
