Avid hikers Dave and Elena were always interested in finding a good, comfortable path to follow. They especially liked to hike the well-worn mountains of the Northeast. One place that they never seemed to tire of returning to was the lake region of New Hampshire. For years they had been traveling from their home in New Jersey to the area as members of the Appalachian Mountain Club. It wasn't surprising, therefore, that the couple decided to relocate here to retire once they found enough suitable property where they could build a home close to the hiking trials they enjoyed so much with family and friends.

Like many people excited by the prospect of building their own custom home, Dave spent many nights on his home computer designing a floor plan. "He took literally months just fussing around with the design," Elena says.

When he finally got a reasonably good depiction of a layout they both liked, Elena bought Dave a 3-D architectural design program, which enabled the couple to see just what it would be like to walk through the floor plan that Dave had come up with. "The program also showed us where we could put walls and other features," Elena says.

Playing around with the floor plan also naturally led the couple to think about what type of home would be best suited for their mountain property. They naturally considered logs.

The rear of the home takes advantage of the hilltop location, providing windows and a wide deck from which to enjoy spectacular views of the valley below and several New Hampshire mountain ranges in the distance.
